Maryland Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS)
BEPS is a standard for all covered buildings in the state. The standard is designed to drive down overall energy usage as well as reduce direct, onsite, greenhouse gas emissions creating by combusting fossil fuels. The first step of Maryland BEPS is to report a building’s 2024 energy consumption and other details through Energy Star Portfolio Manager starting in 2025. Buildings that meet the standards set will not have to take action. Buildings that do not meet the standard will have to take actions toward achieving compliance over a five (5) year compliance period . Maryland Energy Advisors is here to help.
Who Does it Apply to?
Most buildings above 35,000 square feet – including large commercial sites, multifamily residential dwellings and state-owned properties – will be required to participate and submit data including property type, gross floor area, hours of operation, occupancy details, meter data and details surrounding non-utility provided fuels.
Buildings in the state of Maryland over 35,000 sq. ft. (excluding parking garage area) are subject to Maryland BEPS, except for historic properties, public and non-public elementary and secondary schools, and facilities primarily used for agriculture or manufacturing.
Deadline to Report 2025 data is June 1, 2026
